Meant his tummy didn't know it was full until way after it was full, you'd sit him up for a burp and he'd just overflow poor kid. If you soaked them in a lanolin solution (pea sized piece of lanolin in 4-5 litres warm water) then wring them out and allow them to dry they would in fact take on water repelling properties. Same principle applies to woollen "longies" used to cover cloth nappies.
